The name sounds like marketing, which is a shame, because the thing itself is honest engineering. Eco-Drive is Citizen’s light-powered movement — the reason 473 of the watches in our case will never ask you for a battery. Here is what it does, minus the brochure. |

No. 01 — Light in, time out The dial is doing quiet work. Beneath the dial sits a cell that turns light into power, and that power is what drives the hands. Not a wind-up spring, not a throwaway battery — light, converted and stored, running the watch the whole time it’s on your wrist or on the dresser. |

No. 02 — Any light counts It is not a solar panel waiting for July. The word people trip on is “solar.” Eco-Drive charges from any light source: the window over your desk, the lamp beside the bed, a fluorescent tube in a February office. A watch that lives an ordinary indoor life keeps itself running. There is no ritual to learn and nothing to remember. |

No. 03 — What it removes No battery changes. Ever. A quartz watch stops one day, usually a Tuesday, usually before something important, and then it waits in a drawer for a battery errand that takes months to happen. Eco-Drive removes that whole small story from your life. No battery to replace means no dead watch in the drawer — and no round trip to a counter to revive it. That’s the case for it, made plainly. It is also why an Eco-Drive is our standing answer when someone asks for a watch they can give without instructions: wear it near light, and it keeps time. |
